We are thrilled to announce our Bernalillo County Fire Station #66 project has won an Eagle award at this year’s NAIOP Awards of Excellence event.
Bernalillo County Fire Station #66 is the county’s first new fire station in more than 25 years and largest to date. At 11,474 square feet, the facility features four full-size, drive-through apparatus bays, 11 firefighter bunks, training and office space, wellness-focused living areas, and an outdoor patio. Its designation as “Station 66” pays homage to its prominent location along historic Route 66, where it now serves as both a civic landmark and a critical emergency services hub for the rapidly growing West Mesa community.
World-Class Living Environment
The station was designed to set a new standard for public safety facilities in Bernalillo County. Inside, the design prioritizes firefighter safety and well-being, with clearly separated hot and cold zones, dedicated decontamination areas, private sleeping quarters, a fitness room, and an outdoor patio that fosters both wellness and camaraderie.
Strategic Construction Sequencing
The delivery of Fire Station #66 required the team to overcome several significant challenges. The site itself presented the first obstacle: a large retaining wall encircled the property, and construction sequencing required the wall to be completed before the building footprint could be established. This critical path item was managed with careful planning to keep the project on schedule.
Sustainable Design & Construction
Sustainability and resiliency are central to Station #66’s design. Passive solar strategies, high-efficiency systems, and xeriscape landscaping reduce environmental impact. With capacity built to anticipate future growth, Station #66 is a forward-looking model for resilient, sustainable, and community-centered emergency service.
Thank you to our HB project team, Bernalillo County, Vigil & Associates, and all of our engineering and trade partners for remarkable collaboration on this project.
