Over the past 12 weeks, a group of HB team members wrapped up our PM 101 course—a hands-on, practical training series designed to help early-career project staff build confidence in the work of project delivery. We were excited to have team members from across the company attend, including HR, Marketing, HR, and Accounting department members.
Led by HB Executive Vice President Zach Gruen, the course combined technical content with real-world perspective. Zach’s involvement gave the group access to hard-earned lessons, thoughtful examples, and honest insight into what it takes to lead well on a jobsite.
Learning Through Practice
PM 101 was built around the realities of the work. The sessions focused on helping participants better understand their roles, make sense of complex project demands, and take more ownership of overall project and company success.
Topics covered included:
- Submittals, RFIs, safety responsibilities, and meeting documentation
- Managing shifting priorities and competing deadlines
- Developing and managing budgets
- Coordinating with vendors and subcontractors
- HB’s 360-degree use of Procore, from drawings to punchlists to field execution
- Long-term planning tools like pull planning, and how to connect them to daily work
- Contributing to HB’s Pre-Execution Planning (PEP) meetings using a strategic mindset
Participants also brought real project examples into the room—highlighting tasks they felt ready to take on and working through where they still had questions. The goal wasn’t just to teach—it was to build a habit of curiosity, initiative, and reflection.
Thank You PM 101 Inaugural Class!
Thank you to everyone who showed up week after week. The conversations you started and the work you did will carry forward into the jobs we build, the teams we lead, and the way we work together.
