The project team at CYFD’s Bernalillo County Children’s Wellness Center continues to make progress on Phase II of a large scale, multi-building renovation. Led by HB Construction, crews are renovating over 100,000 sq ft of interior space in order to finalize the campus.
Finished in December 2018, Phase I included upgrades to the three buildings at what was previously the Pinetree Business Center. It was completed in a compressed time frame to meet the State’s deadline and included space for a new receiving center, protective services, family visitation, statewide central call center, juvenile justice, IT, and a training academy.
Now at the midway point, Phase II includes the renovation of two more buildings, additional modernization of systems, and site upgrades. Other work will include a secure playground, a feature that the project team prioritized in the Phase II budget.
Design-Build Dividends
The use of Design-Build has allowed HB, architect Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, and the rest of the integrated design/construction team to continually propose solutions that protect or add value to the State’s investment. In particular, the retrofitting of Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, and Fire Protection systems have benefitted from the input of trade experts.
“Wilson Electric and KDC Mechanical were critical in establishing the budget and working towards the State’s needs,” said HB Executive Vice President Zach Gruen. “Working together and looking at the full scope of CYFD needs, we were able to design a higher quality end product than what was originally required.”
