Darian recently brought that perspective to a UNM Alumni Student-Athlete panel, where she reflected on her time with the UNM Women’s Golf team and how that experience helped prepare her for success in the professional world.

“Being a student-athlete requires discipline, accountability, and self-motivation. During my time at UNM, I learned how to manage competing priorities and perform under pressure while balancing studies, athletics, and team responsibilities. Whether it was studying for finals during the conference championship, or heading straight to long practices after a full day of classes and homework, I developed the ability to stay focused and push through challenges.

I also learned how individual performance contributes to a team’s success. That lesson has translated directly into my professional career. At the end of the day, we’re all working towards a common goal, and I find a lot of motivation in being part of a team that succeeds together.” – Darian Zachek

Since joining HB, Darian has found meaningful opportunities to grow and contribute as an integral part of her project team. She is recognized for her strong eye for detail and her ability to ensure accuracy and completeness in critical project documentation. Darian is currently working on the ABQ School of Excellence, where she assists with schedule tracking, managing RFIs, and coordinating change orders.

“After earning my master’s degree, I was open to exploring career opportunities across a variety of industries. Construction wasn’t initially on my radar, but I reached out to Julia Ellis after hearing great things about HB and the company’s culture. Despite my lack of industry experience, she was willing to take a chance on me, and I’m incredibly grateful for that opportunity.

I’ve grown to love the fast-paced nature of construction and the opportunity to solve problems, collaborate with talented people, and complete projects that have a lasting impact on our community.” – Darian Zachek

Darian’s path from student-athlete to Project Engineer reflects the value of bringing diverse experiences into construction. The skills developed as a Lobo, from leadership and accountability to teamwork and problem solving, continue to shape the way students can contribute to the construction industry.

“Don’t be intimidated if you don’t have a construction background, just jump in. The industry is demanding, but many of the qualities that make someone successful as a student-athlete also translate directly into construction. In many ways, the construction industry reminds me of being a student-athlete. You’re working towards a goal, relying on your teammates, and finding solutions to challenges along the way. Athletes are equipped for this environment; we’ve been training this for the majority of our lives. Be willing to learn, work hard, and embrace the challenge. You’ll fit right in.” – Darian Zachek
