This summer, HB welcomed five interns for a behind-the-scenes look at the people, processes, and teamwork that keeps HB moving forward.

Over the course of the internship, they spent time with teams across operations, safety, project management, accounting, marketing, and field leadership. By experiencing different parts of HB, they saw how each role contributes to delivering successful projects and serving the communities where we build.

For some, the most valuable moments came from seeing construction in action.

“I really enjoyed being in the field at AHA Casitas del Camino. I learned a lot about field operations and everything that goes into the project.”

Others valued the opportunity to understand how the company functions as a whole.

“My favorite part of the internship was getting to bounce around all the different departments of the company and getting to see who all does what and how it operates.”

Beyond learning the business, the interns also had opportunities to give back. They took part in community-building efforts including the PB&J backpack drive and volunteered with Roc Solid to help build a playset for a child battling cancer.

The summer culminated in a capstone project centered on a sample RFP. Working as a team, the interns developed a strategy covering scheduling, pricing, site logistics, and subcontractor selection, then presented their approach to HB leaders and received constructive feedback.

The exercise brought one of the biggest lessons of the summer into focus: construction depends on coordination, communication, and the contributions of many different people.

“My biggest takeaway from this internship was how many moving parts need to be going on together to make sure that everything runs smoothly, and it made me realize how big communication is within a construction company.”

For students exploring what comes next, experiences like these can open the door to careers they may not have considered. Construction offers opportunities far beyond the jobsite, with paths in project management, safety, estimating, accounting, marketing, field leadership, and more.

Matthew Medina offered a simple piece of advice for anyone beginning that journey:

“Be willing to learn from others, always look for ways to solve problems, and remember that asking questions is a good thing.”
